Reformat XP - Sound Card dead?

I had a nasty virus last night resulting in me needing to re format windows XP. It would get half way through its starting sequence and then it would reboot again, over and over again, so i had no choice but to reformat.

I Re-formatted the hard drive and lost all the contents of C drive (About 30gigs worth) I've managed to recover most of the files with data recovery software and my ipod but im still missing a few things :(

Anyway, i cannot get the soundcard to work now, i have used the applications cd for the realtek AC97 driver. It installs fine and then restarts but when i go to ''sounds and audio devices'' in the control panel, its blank. Its not recognising it for some reason. Ive also tried updating the sound cards drivers from the web but still no joy:(

So i assume my sound card is dead? It was working fine yesterday though before the crash.

Now i understand to replace the sound card, i need to open up the computer and replace it? Now im not too keen on doing that as i dont want to damage motherboard so are there any other options in getting sound from my PC?

I was looking at USB speakers, but im unsure as to whether i need a 'working' internal soundcard also.

Anybody know how to get the sound back?

Cheers:)

Its a medion 2.8ghz. Thats all i know really, im not too good with computers.

Its about 4 years old now and this is the 1st problem ive had with it.

So i can get sound through the USB with speakers? Sod fiddling about with internal soundcards if thats all you need to do.

That's all i need to know, cheers

their are many variants of the AC97 Audio chipset, if the sound card is on-board (jacks are near keyboard socket etc) then reboot your machine and when all the writing comes up way way way before windows as in as soon as it turns on press pause on your keyboard and jot down the model of your motherboard, and i'll point you too the required drivers.

Some motherboard have a start-up logo instead of the post screen (all the text) which you can get out of by pressing either tab ot esc depending on the motherboard

Don't know if you have sorted it yet, but i'd sayit was your sound card...Serious virus's do tend to effect them, i had a serious one and my sound card went as well, i'll try get some more info if you need it as a few of my friends are good with comps!

lol sorry but I doubt you will get a virus that will afeck your sound. Was thinking it could be something to do with your BIOS mitch but I doubt it if you havent touched it?

:clap2:

Went into the startup screen F1, integrated peripherals, SIS onchip PCI device and the onboard sound function was disabled:slap:

I know i never disabled it though, so it must have been changed during the reformat?

All sorted now though, thanks for all your help:D

virus are either trojans (which allow users to connect to ur pc) or mail bombers (which use your email to distribute themselves) i've NEVER know a virus to affect the sound card!

If you read above you'll see he has re-installed his pc, so the reason for the none working sound card is the fact of not having the correct driver installed!

Mitchy go to the Medion wedsite (link above) and follow instructs to find your s/n to enter in the driver download section and download your soundcard driver! If that does not work it's because windows has detected it and labeled it as an unknown driver and you have to go into device manager and uninstall the ones under the yellow question mark then press the icon at top of device manager to detect plug n play hardware (namely your sound card in this instance)

Mitchy try this, might not work but try it anyway.

Go to control panel > Administrative tools > Services.

Then find "windows audio" It should say its started and its on automatic.

But on the other hand, probably need the right driver(s)

David, ive been onto the medion website and entered the serial number to give a list of the drivers available but unfortunately none are available for the audio.

I have also been into device manager but the only thing with the yellow question mark is my printer, again there is no evidence of having a sound card installed?

I would have thought my applications disc would have had the correct AC97 driver on it but it still doesn't work.

Ill give medion a phone today as they have a help line number, maybe they'll be able to point me in the right direction.

Cheers for your help anyway:)

I may have fiddled about with the BIOS settings, i tried all sorts to not have to re format, so it may be that.

Bevan...Tried that and its set to auto
