Right have decided to go for a home made airbox and will put alot of design and thought into it, below is a diagram of what i have at the moment and what i hope to have afterwards.

Image

ok the number one image is basically me remomving the box below the battery and the old air inlet begind the light.

i have then neatly chopped the bottom of the air box allowing a greater amount of air to get in, a bit like an open cone. I know this is likley to still have a bit of heatsoak, but have noticed a gain in lower end acceleration and an induction noise.

my second diagram is how i want it when i ge the correct materials and measurements. this will allow an new inlet to be placed at the front of car in between that tight cap of the radiator and bumper structure, and will allow cold air to flow very quickly to the filter and onwards.

your thoughts please
thanks

nice idea, however i am very skeptical as, mg/rover will have spend thousands designing the airbox, and no offence but they probably have people that are alot more knowledgable than yourself deisigning them. I dont think any preformance is to the gain in all honesty

The airboxes always are and always will be a compromise between functionality and cost. There is a very good possibility that you will make an improvement (at the cost of increased servicing or possible reduced fitration/increased engine wear) but just as good a possibility that you will actually reduce performance. Only way to prove it is to try ity and do a rolling road before and after.
At the end of the day the amount of increase you are going to get from induction mods alone are small and hardly noticable unless coupled with manifold/exhaust/engine modifications

+1

the difference between a good induction kit, and an OK induction kit is about 0.5bhp

like i say i aint done it yet ind its just my planning but i understand what you say. I mean surelly what i have at the moment would be as good as a open cone like pipercross o what would the differences be

thanks

I know a lot of people have experimented with all sorts of mods to the airbox. Some people I know took a trepanning tool and put loads of extra holes into the airbox to try and get a bit more air in and some induction roar. I know another mod is to fit the 620 airbox which has a bigger filter and bigger pipes so supossedly less restrictive.
At the end of the day, its your car, just do what you feel happiest doing. Ask 10 people on here and you will get 10 different opinions. Choose what you think sounds right to you and do it.

think thats one of the best bits of advice ive seen on here ever

:smartass:that,s the end of class

IMO mg/rover spent millions making the k series engine! they air box they made will be the best design for the engine

also what engine do you have in your mg/rover ? i.e 1.4,1.8 or the 1.8 vvc ? have you done another modification to the engine ?
