Thoughts on the ZS 180 V6?

Right since it is almost impossible to get a ZT v8, I started looking at the ZS 180.
Just wondered, is there any common problems with the cars. Most of them are standard which is good but would the car benefit from a remap or am i asking for trouble reliability wise?
Mostly looking at MK1s.

timing belts are quite a big undertaking, thermostats leaking, manifolds rattling, vis valves not working, same brakes as the zr so can see seized rear calipers, clutch hydraulics failing

Hi, for the money the ZS180's are a performance bargain IMHO. I have had mine since Jan this year and have done about 6000 miles (used daily) - totally faultless car now at 48,000. From my little mechanical knowledge the KV6's have a power VIS (Variable Intake System) valve and Balance valve. The Power valve works at 3K and im not 100% sure what the balance valve does and when it works. The power valve is most noticeable in second gear whilst crawling and as soon as you hit 3k you notice a surge in power (bit of a extra jolt forward) at worst for the pair they are 145 posted or if your good with soldering the existing ones can be repaired. Im lucky enough that both mine work (had a forum memeber come and test them in his car which has an indicator kit fitted to his car)

I love the styling of the MK1 but the interior really is bland even with colour coded monaco's. But the way it drives makes me forget the interior lol

With ref to the belts they are an expensive job (550 upwards) but many people run the cars without the belts change (a google search of KV6 cambelt failure etc is not common)

Hope this helps (search my previous threads to see my TB 180)

But overall a very strong car that handles brilliantly.

Nice one guys

Hopefully will be able to check some out soon.

One last question, could they be a good basis for a track day car? I know they were touring cars back in the day but could the v6 cope?

The vis basically alters the length of the inlet manifold tract which helps out with low end torque. The butterflys are connected by what i could describe as a small wiper linkage type connection. If dirty oil gets in it wears the ball joints which causes the chatter you hwar. The actial motors themself can fail too which usually means they need resoldered.
As for a track car. Several run them. The standard induction is a little limiting so would ditch that for a n inner wing setup. The V6 isnt as prone to hgf as the k4. Although the mgzs track car blew its engine up

Ill have a look at the vis unit if i go to see any. Doesn't sound like a hard fix just awkward. Just need to find a half decent example.

there are some real bargains out there now

I had a mk2 180 for just under 2 years and loved it. The build quality was miles better than my old mk2 ZR was, it handled well out of the box and had just about the smoothest engine I've ever driven. Combine that with a decent exhaust and it sounds fantastic.

Don't buy it if you plan on trying to up the power. I spent a small fortune on mine (about 1k on the inlet and exhaust system!) and only got 8bhp more than standard. You can get a little more with cams ect but not much.

I loved mine so much I ended up buying a BTCC ZS when I started to miss it lol

Sounds great! Since im going to be racing it i want as much reliability as i can get so the car engine wise will be untouched apart from maybe a CDA induction into the wing. All the money will go on bucket seats, tyres, coilovers and the usual essentials. I was tempted with a ZR as well as its going to be either ZR or ZS, both have pros and cons so just need to view some really.

Since your a racing man, what stuff is worth concentrating on most when building a track car?

btw your zs is awesome!!
