Crank timing sprocket

Does anyone know how you get the crank timing sprocket off? I`ve got everything else off, its just the sprocket wonít come off.
I have got the head off a 1400 and even though the timing marks on the sprocket are in-line with the line on the block, number 1+4 pistons are near the top of their stroke.
I seem to remember the last time I had a head off an 1800 that the pistons were all about mid stroke when the timing marks were aligned.
I`m guessing that maybe the gear wheel was put on wrong by the last person that was in there. Fingers crossed itís that simple.
