When stationary, the car sometime sounds 'diesely'. its not loud at all, you have to really listen to notice. It goes away when I put the clutch in. Also, slight whine when I drive off in first, and revers is loud.

What you think?

doesnt look like it was replaced with the engine, doesnt mention anywhere on the invoice. Just out of curiosity, what does S/F engine assembly mean?

The rattle is the Clutch Release Bearing (otherwise known as thrust bearing)

The whine in reverse is because the reverse idler pulley is a straight cut gear as opposed to helical cut.
Straight cut gears create whine, hence motorsport boxes are so noisy
