Ok peeps.

My insurance is up for renewal in the next couple of week and I got my quote through from Direct Line who I have been with for quite a few years. I decided I had better inform them of my mods and gave them a bell to find my policy's excess increase by £200 and the insurance increase by £120.

The mods I told them about where my side skirts, lexus lights and he blueflame exhaust.

So - my questions are to those of you who have modified their cars and told their insurance. Which insurance company do you use and to what level have you declared your mods.

Just after a few ideas so I can start phoning around for quotes.

Try Elephant mate, they have a pretty good website where you just select what mods you have from a list.

I tried for mine, adding an exhaust and new body features and it only put the premium up by £25 with no extra excess.

Virgin motor insurance is who i am with, ok i have no mods at the moment but its £400 a yr FComp, im 23 with full no claims no points etc...

Thing i like about Virgin is they don't charge you to pay monthly...most companies do, especially tesco who i was with b4, charge me about 50-60 a year for the privilage of monthly installments!!

Not sure how Virgin will live up when i start doing some mods :-k

I was paying £355 fully comp with direct line with £50 excess - I am 35. I think adding 200 to the excess and £120 to the insurance for an exhaust, lights and side skirts is a bit steep. They said the reason was that they would have to pay for the mods in the case of an accident - but they wont insure the car on the basis I would pay for the mods and that they would only have to cover the basic car.

Why do i need a tracker #-o

It's because your car is a 2002 model, and you have several significant mods. The early ZR's had the security of their locking/alarm system compromised and are consequently an easy target for thieves. (I have read somewhere that the ZR is the UK's most stolen hot hatch). Consequently a lot of insurers require extra security to be added and/or a tracking system.

ZR's from 2003 model year on (late 52 plates onward) have an improved security system with a 'double locking' feature, and are therefore regarded as alower insurance risk.
