:(

I was on my way to work this morning in all the pouring rain, about 20 miles from home noticed the temp gauge creeping up towards the red. Just as I was about to pull in, the temp dropped back to normal. Checked the hot air from the heater which was fine so pressed on but about a mile further on, noticed lots of white smoke in my rearview mirror.
Pulled into a lay-by and checked under the bonnet. No water in the header tank, engine is idling very rough and lumpy (possibly only firing on 3 cylinders) checked at the back and still lots of steam from the exhaust.
Turned the engine off and phoned the breakdown services.
2 hours later dropped it off at the garage and walked home to get the other car and go into work late.

So looks like I will have a nice little bill although if it costs too much I'll just scrap it!

BTW, it isnt the K series powered ZR, it was my Honda powered GTi :(

ouch, unlucky mate, can u not do the head urself?
Yes but I dont really have the time or the facilities as with work and travelling I am away from home between 10 and 12 hours plus the garage I own only just fits the ZR so havent really got anaywhere I can do any serious work on it.

At the end of the day it cost me £450 and I have driven if for 3 years without any problems so it dosent really owe me any money. If I can put it back on the road cheaply I will as it is a dream to drive and quite rare now.

If I were still in the RAF and had the motor club facilities available to me I wouldnt have a problem with doing the head (done quite a few on various cars including my first, a Triumph Herald and my old mans Standard Ensign).

At the end of the day I have to look at what it would cost me to repair against the cost of replacement.

Macs gave me a 'stupid' quote but the breakdown driver (Philserve from Carterton) suggested a garage just round the corner from the auctions. He is a bit of a K series specialist and can do a HGF repair on the K series for around £300 to £400 all in. Says it may be a bit more as the Honda spares are more expensive. The driver of the breakdown said he would buy it off me if I scrap it.

At least I still have the ZR to ferry me back and forward to work until I get it all sorted.

Who knows if it does work out too expensive then I may keep it and work it myself slow time (put a Vtec engine in as a street sleeper, LOL). Its far too good condition to scrap and only has a genuine 80K on the clock. Might give me an excuse though to to get the MG Midget I have hankered after.

Will be good to find out how the guy does with the repair in case we need him in the future....:bounce:
