Nope, they don't always need it. You need to have the head checked for hardness and make sure its not warped or has indentations around the fire rings. If that's all ok then it should be fine to use again without skimming.

Cheers mate this guide basically gave me the confidence to have a go. That VVC synchronizing wasnt so scary after all the worrying I did.

My advice to add to this thread is really simple advice that shouldnt even need saying.

DONT BUY A CHEAP GASKET SET OFF EBAY AND EXPECT IT TO LAST.

250 miles and it was out of its face, knocking on 400 with the Genuine gasket and the cars just getting better and better.
