Everyone who is able to should give blood as you never know when you or your family etc may need it!...

Well, god to see we give blood. My mum takes blood from people in Manchester/Bolton/Bury and works for the National Blood Service. There are cryin out for doners and it only takes 30/40 mins everytime... Its a worthy cause and everyone should give blood (u may need it back someday)

I'm freaked by needles! but I've given 5 pints so far. Last time I got so worked up I burst into tears before I had it done! Typical girl!!
I can't give blood at the moment cause I'm on the waiting list for an op (cancellation list) so I could be called in at any time. Hopefully I won't need my blood back!
I've managed to convince 3 people to become donors though I think its a great thing to do, You never know who you might save

I have never given blood, not because I dont want to, but even the tinyest bit of blood makes me weak at the knees and I just faint.

(Ask Colin at my work, he accidentaly put a star screwdriver right through the palm of his hand..... I literally collapsed and was out cold!)

I did just the other day and I've been trying for the last few times, but my regular vein was having a bad time and refused to bleed. She had a poke at the other arm, but that one wasn't having any of it either, so we tried the regular arm and she eventually got her armful out of me.

If you don't do it, why the hell not? I am terrified of needles, but I am saving a life every time I do it. The people who need the blood are probably scared of the sight of needles too, but they don't really have a lot of choice in the matter, do they?

Blood?

I probably sound selfish but the word blood churns my stomach!
I'd sooner die than have a blood test, infact if i was to donate blood i would prefer to be shot and then bleed into a bucket than have it taken out through a needle. ughhhhh!!!!! :nurse:

One blood donation can actually help to save 3 peoples lives because the donation is processed into red cells, platelets and plasma..... all of which can go to a different person.

Red cells are used for anaemic people and people who have lost a lot of blood or who have a low haemoglobin (which carries oxygen round the body), whereas platelets can be used to raise the platelet count (helps the blood clot/form scabs so we dont bleed to death) in people who have certain disroders or have low platelets as a result of chemotherapy etc and plasma contains clotting factors and can be used to treat haemophilliacs and patients who have overdosed on warfarin as a result of treatment for DVTs etc.

There is a lot more to blood than people realise, I am a scientist who specialises in haematology and blood transfusion.

There are in fact over twenty blood group systems. ABO system is one and rhesus is another..... so when you say you are A+, you are actually only quoting your blood group for the two most important blood group systems....

for instance, I am A+ R0r kk Jk(a+b-) fy(a-b+) MM Ss Le(a+b-)

maybe one of you may have found that interesting!!! :wohow:
