so i blew my head gasket not sure when, i did not realise my car was not giving me any trouble or anything, so all the driving i was doing i was damaging my engine so about 3 or 4 weeks ago i broke down and that is when i discovered symptons of blown head gasket, so i take it to mg in epsom tell them i think its blown head gasket.. they say starts from £600... im like ok then fix it, so i then get a call confirming blown head gasket and the price is £900.. ok fix it i say, then today i get a call from them saying my engine is in really bad shape, i need new head at £2000 then they say i need new enging as i have melted everything in my old one including manifold and its £5000!

ok so now im fucked!

be carefull as this might happen to you.

check your water(coolent) levels.

think i lost alot of water due to havin front end crash and maybe rad was not fixed so was leaking or something,

for the price i would rather have a turbo conversion, which is what i would do if the car was not on finance, iv stopped payments and am giving it back to them!

If you can prove that it was as a result of the (i guess insurance) repair, why not get on to them?

FIVE GRAND!!! Oh my God. That can't be a genuine figure surely?? Have a ring around a few dealers. They should be able to sort you out for a shit load less than that. What spec's the engine? I know someone in the trade (in Kent) who might be able to help or point you in the right direction (PM me if you like).

bull......sh1t it costs that much. They're talking out of their arse mate. a new engine doesn't even cost that! they're trying to rip you out of everything. Get them to prove its all melted. I've never seen one of these engines melt, haven't even seen one self destruct.

Don't let them do the work AT ALL. get them to release the car and get someone that knows something about the k series to work on it rather than a bunch of monkeys that are trying to rip you off for everything you've got.

Steve - big hater of so called companies that just keep cars for ages and talk rubbish to their customers.

Had exactly the same happen to me.. except it was totally my fault..

i fitted samco hoses - which are now on rich's (bullitts) car - went down the motorway to notts one night, and on the way back there was steam coming up from under the bonnet.. had a look, whilst scalding myslef, and one of the hoses had popped off of the radiator.. all my coolant was gone.. i must have only been driving for 20mins.. but the car would no longer start! bugger!

took it into mg the following day on the back of a low loader and told my mate who worked on the service desk what happened..

they said they would do the work "under warranty" !!! LUCKILY !! this was about a year ago now..!

At first they thought it was just a new head gasket - then it turned out that it needed a new top end - Cost would've been £2000 but they were willing to tell a few white lies and do it under warranty.

I had the car for 2 weeks and the engine started knocking - they thought it was piston slap - but then it started over heating and stalling all of the time..

Took it back to the dealer and they said it needed another new top end and a new bottom end! = basically a new engine. Cost of work £5000, but i got it under warranty. - No probs since.#

I'm not tryin to rub it in, as i was very lucky to get mine fixed under warranty, but it took 20mins for me to screw up the entire engine to the extent that it needed a new top and bottom end.. so driving for 3-4 weeks is bound to do enough damage to warrant a £5000 bill.

Hope you manage to sort it all out.. sorry for the essay!

Blown Head Gasket

Hi ya mate I have just had the headgasket done on my 160 and I must have been lucky. My water started dissapearing and I didnt get it fixed for about a month and I was still canning it. It cost me £780 and I had new front pads fitted at the same time. £5000 is alot of money I really cant see it costing that much. Even on mine the emulsified oil had affected everything including the radiator and it still came no where near your quote even with a cracked head I would have said no more than £1500.
