Start Problem

Hi all,

I have a ZR which is having a problem starting. When I try to start the car it fires and the engine turns over a couple of times and then stalls. If I try to start the car and put my foot to the floor then the car will eventually start after the engine has turned over about 3 or four times. I've changed the spark plugs so far to try and sort out the problem but does anyone know what else this problem could be. The car runs perfectly when the car has started correctly. It does not stall and pulls away ok. It doesn't judder or anything when pulling away. If I turn off the car after the engine is warm the car still won't start correctly.

Has anyone got any ideas what the problem is ?

Thanks,

Chris

Try simple things first.
1 can you here the fuel pump when switch on to the igntion before you turn over the engine ? (fuel pressure or blocked ijectors)
2 Do you have access to fault code reader.
3 Check the tightness of the red supply cable from the battery through the fuse box and across the 150 amp fuse in the fuse box. (voltage drop when turning over the engine can affect the ecu and injector drive.
4 If it has a distribitor cap raplace and fit a new rotor arm.
5 Crank sensor may be faulty.
6 coolant temp may be faulty.

head gasket failure, as when trying to start it could be pumping water into the engine?

is there a loss of coolant atall?

The coolant levels haven't dropped and I haven't had to put any coolant in for a while now. The coolant level is still just under the max mark so I don't think it's losing coolant at all.

thanks ZR_M4J - mine is 2002 so I'll ignore point 4 but I'll be trying all the other things .... I don't have a fault code reader but I'm gonna try all the others.

Only takes a tiny drop of coolant or oil

Hope it's something simple
