Car won't start!

Had some problems with the 160 since I bought it.

Firstly all the lights kept flickering, so I stole the alternator from my 1.4 and put it in the 160. This stopped the flickering and it started fine that day.

The next day, I went to start it and on the first try it didn't start, on the second it did. I drove it about 5 miles, came back and it wouldn't start again at all. Managed to jump start it and got home.

When I got there, I pulled off the plug on the side of the alternator (sorry I'm female and don't know the actual name), put it back on and it's been fine for 2 weeks until tonight and I had to jump start it again.

The lights and stereo all come on, and there's a loud tick when I turn the key, it just won't start. Any ideas? I know the battery is fine as I did a test on it. Could it be something to do with the alternator being from a 1.4 or would that have nothing to do with it?

I did say the battery is fine, I put a charger on it on Saturday, and the charger tells you how much is left in the battery, and it's perfect. Battery is almost new by the looks of it.

Check connections to starter? They rust/corrode clean the contacts, worth doing any to eliminate it out of the picture altho you said you jump started so would mean that isn't the problem, carry out a current drain test maybe something is drawing excess current

TBH those chargers won't do a proper battery test. If your alternator has been draining the battery it can knacker it.

can only really check a battery on a drop tester, they will charge and hold a surface charge but that disapears easily, whats the battery voltage when it wont start?
