car sometimes wont start electrical immobilizer

HI,

my rover streetwise occasionally wont start

I turn the key all the way to start the the car and the car makes an internal beep and doesnt start

If i press the unlock on the key fob it stops the beep and when i turn the ignition the car will start

What should i do about this? Its not a problem as i can always start the car by pressing the unlock button if it beeps at me but its surely not good that this happens all the time

Its the immobiliser kicking in. If you unlock the car and don't start it within a certain time period (can't remember the time) it will time out and reactivate the immobiliser.

So there's nothing wrong, its just how it works.

Probably the battery needing replaced in your fob then. All it takes is a slightly weak signal to not register it.

Hmm, what age is your ZR? Is it a round or square key fob.

54 plate rover streetwise, round 2 button fob

I have tried getting in the car faster and it does seem to start first time by doing this, but still shouldn't time out as soon as it seems to

Right. Check your passenger footwell and see if there's any dampness under the carpets. As the SCU is situated above there in the dash and if any signs of moisture is there then it's a good chance that's the cause.

But also next time it happens just wave the fob next to the ignition barrel as that should detect the fob and deactivate the immobiliser, if not then its possible the pickup in the ignition barrel isn't working.

How quick are you getting into the car after you've unlocked the car? As I seem to remember it only being a matter of 10s (if that) for it to time out.
