Have you checked fuse 14 in passenger compartment fuse box (your car is mk1 I suppose)?

Two things are on my mind:

- you might have bare wires or snapped wires in tailgate wiring loom (right hand side tube in the upper corner when you open the tailagte), and that these wires are making you problems - but I doubt that would prevent C/L from working;

- you have damaged 5AS alarm unit and bacuse of that your C/L is not working;

This damage might be rapairable - depending of damage degree, but skilled electrician would need to inspect that part.

Yes it would, as only one track on printed circuit board colud be damaged and affecting only C/L part. This track could be overridden with new piece of wire, but that depends of degree of damage.
