Tappet noise ?

Our ZR 105 has an occasional very loud tappet type noise when starting from cold . Seems to be coming from no.1 cylinder and goes away after 20 -30 seconds .
I have heard this is common with the K-series .Is it curable with oil additives / flushes or is a mechanical replacement usually needed ? Once the engine has warmed up it is smooth and quiet , but that initial knocking is very undesirable !

It is fairly common for the hydraulic lifters to become clogged up internally, and sometimes even the very small oil hole becomes blocked - both reduce the operation of the lifter, which in turn causes a rattle at start up until the oil is able to pressurise the lifter again.

If it clears after a few seconds, it probably isn't worth doing anything about it to be honest. Use of an engine flush can improve matters, but is not guaranteed. If you feel like removing the upper half of the cam carrier, the lifters can be removed, dismantled and any build up of crud removed.

The underlying cause of the crud build up is using cheap poor quality engine oils, and insufficiently frequent oil changes. Engines that have a regular oil change with a good quality oil don't seem to suffer this problem as much.

Might be a bit of "piston slap" being a 1.4 fairly common to be honest
